Comparing Auto Insurance

Comparing insurance rates can save you quite a bit of money - insurance rates for the same type of cover can fluctuate between hundreds of dollars. With the right information market research, you do not have to go with a policy which makes you pay extra every time you pay its premium.

Where to Compare Auto Insurance

If you are in the US, the first step for you when you want to get auto insurance is to talk to your state's insurance department. They will tell you about the coverage required by the state laws, and also the companies that offer that type of coverage. If you are not in the US, you too will have the option of talking to the right insurance body of your state or province. When looking for insurance, you can also check out the companies that your friends and colleagues get their insurance from. This will give you direct feedback not just on the prices but also the quality of service. Another place to get feedback on insurers is online - there are a number of review sites where people share their experiences with car insurance companies.

Different Covers for Different Cars

Auto insurance covers may of one of the following types

Bodily injury liability
Property damage liability
Personal Injury Protection or Medical payments
Collision and Comprehensive cover
Uninsured or Underinsured motorists coverage
Extras, like roadside assistance

Depending on the law applicable in your region or state, you may need to take a few specific covers among these, so when you compare two or more plans, you should be comparing like to like. Which means compare two plans only for the covers that you will be opting for. One point of note is paying higher deductibles - in many policies, you can lower your premium a lot if you agree to pay higher deductible. This can change how you compare policies because different policies will have different pricing for deductibles.

Comparison shopping always helps in getting a cheap policy. But the process of comparing is not so easy as it appears. One has to learn about all the coverage options and what is actually needed when comparing quotes.
